The basic rules of 2048 are very simple. The game is normally played on a four-by-four grid containing sixteen spaces. At the beginning, a few numbered tiles appear on the board. These tiles generally have values such as 2 or 4. The player moves all the tiles in one direction—up, down, left, or right—using the keyboard or touchscreen. Whenever two tiles with the same number collide while moving, they merge into one tile with twice their value. For example, two tiles containing 2 combine to form 4. Two 4 tiles form 8, two 8 tiles form 16, and the process continues. The ultimate goal is to create a tile worth 2048.
