Is a Spice Mill Really Better Than Pre-Ground Spices? (4 อ่าน)

I’ve been thinking about getting a spice mill for my kitchen, but I’m not sure if it’s actually worth the extra step. I usually buy ground spices because they’re convenient, but lately I’ve noticed that some spices seem to lose their flavor pretty quickly after opening.
For those who use a spice mill regularly, does grinding spices fresh really make a noticeable difference in everyday cooking?
I’m especially interested in using whole cumin, coriander seeds, black pepper, cardamom, and dried chilies. I cook a mix of American, Indian, Mexican, and Mediterranean dishes, so I’d like something that can handle different types of spices without being difficult to clean.
One thing I’m also curious about is making my own spice blends. Store-bought blends are convenient, but sometimes I want to adjust the salt, heat, or individual flavors. Is a spice mill useful for making small batches at home, or is it more trouble than it’s worth?
I’ve seen electric grinders and manual mills, and I’m honestly not sure which option makes more sense. An electric model seems faster, especially when cooking during the week, while a manual spice mill looks simple and easy to store.
I also came across Zaica Life while looking at different spices and blends. I liked the idea of experimenting with whole spices instead of always using pre-ground versions, but I’m still trying to figure out what kind of setup makes sense for a regular home kitchen.
For anyone in the US who uses a spice mill, what has your experience been?
A few things I’d love advice on:
Do you notice a real flavor difference with freshly ground spices?
Is an electric or manual spice mill better for everyday use?
Which whole spices do you grind most often?
Is it easy to make and store homemade spice blends?
What should a beginner look for when buying one?
I’m not looking for anything fancy. I mainly want something practical that I’ll actually use instead of leaving it in a cabinet.
Would love to hear what has worked for other home cooks, especially if you’ve been using a spice mill for a while. Are there any mistakes beginners should avoid?
