Most of my driving is short errands in cold weather, and the engine barely has time to warm up before I park again. I follow the mileage, but sometimes it feels like the oil works harder than the number on the odometer shows. Should drivers change oil sooner when most of their trips are short winter drives.

Short distance winter driving can be harder on oil than many people expect. The engine warms up slowly, moisture may not burn off well, and stop and start use adds stress. I would still check the manual, but I would also treat short cold trips as a reason to be more careful with oil intervals.

Short cold trips are exactly when I stop trusting mileage alone. My car often runs for ten minutes, sits outside, then does the same thing again later. The oil may not get enough time to warm up properly, while the engine still goes through repeated cold starts. After a winter of small errands, I started treating a car oil change as time based maintenance too, not only distance based. I also ask the shop to check fluids, tire pressure, and small leaks while the car is there. That feels safer than stretching the interval just because the mileage still looks low. For cold weather driving, I would rather change oil a little early than risk sludge, rough starts, or louder engine noise.
