In the garden, planting garlic is one of the simplest and most satisfying activities. The ideal growing conditions for garlic are rich, well-drained soil that receives lots of sunlight. In order to allow roots to take root before winter, it is best to plant in the autumn, two to four weeks before the ground freezes. Start by choosing wholesome garlic seeds from reputable suppliers like Burpee or other garden centers. With the papery skins still on, break the bulb into individual cloves. With the pointy end pointing upward, plant each clove approximately two inches deep in rows four to six inches apart. For protection against inclement weather, cover with soil and mulch. Water regularly and remove extra mulch in the spring.
