She began her career as a beauty queen on the Manhattan drag circuit and is now a legitimate queen mommy.Crystal LaAsia was her stage name at first. Later on, though, she changed it to LaBeija. She was referred to as La Belleza (the beauty) in several Latina honors, which played a key role in the transition.

Racism and colorism were widespread in the 1960s and 1970s, which prevented colored queens from receiving the credit they were due. To compete, many of them used cosmetics and makeup to whiten their complexion.[/size]
