The future of the B-52 hinges on the Commercial Engine Replacement Program or CERP. The current TF33 engines are over fifty years old and increasingly difficult to maintain. The Air Force selected Rolls-Royce's F130 engine in 2021 to replace all eight powerplants on each aircraft. The F130 is a derivative of the BR725 engine used on Gulfstream business jets. It offers 30 percent better fuel efficiency, reduces maintenance hours by 40 percent, and provides a 20 percent increase in unrefueled range. Each B-52 will receive eight new engines, with installation beginning in 2025 and completion expected by 2035. The aircraft's name was borrowed from a 1940s hairstyle, the beehive, which resembled the bomber's distinctive tail section. Aviation enthusiasts still flock to airshows to see the Stratofortress perform low passes, its eight engines producing a deep, throaty roar that vibrates through the ground. The B-52 is not just a weapon. It is a symbol of American industrial might, engineering ingenuity, and strategic endurance. No other bomber has served so long or adapted so well. As the B-21 Raider enters service in the 2030s, the B-52 will continue flying alongside it, handling missions that require massive payload capacity and long loiter times.
