<p data-start="5119" data-end="5316">Asking for the time is a practical skill in A1 level German. The most common question to ask for the time is <em data-start="5232" data-end="5250">Wie spät ist es? (What time is it?) or <em data-start="5273" data-end="5294">Wieviel Uhr ist es? (What time is it?).
<p data-start="5318" data-end="5367">Here are some examples of how to tell the time:
<ul data-start="5368" data-end="5633">
<li data-start="5368" data-end="5408">It is 3:00. → <em data-start="5388" data-end="5406">Es ist drei Uhr.</li>
<li data-start="5409" data-end="5491">It is 4:30. → <em data-start="5429" data-end="5448">Es ist halb fünf. (German uses “half past the next hour.”)</li>
<li data-start="5492" data-end="5565">It is 7:15. → <em data-start="5512" data-end="5541">Es ist Viertel nach sieben. (Quarter past seven.)</li>
<li data-start="5566" data-end="5633">It is 8:45. → <em data-start="5586" data-end="5612">Es ist Viertel vor neun. (Quarter to nine.)</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="5635" data-end="5698">In formal situations, the 24-hour clock is used. For example:
<ul data-start="5699" data-end="5808">
<li data-start="5699" data-end="5744">13:00 (1 PM) → <em data-start="5720" data-end="5742">Es ist dreizehn Uhr.</li>
<li data-start="5745" data-end="5808">18:45 (6:45 PM) → <em data-start="5769" data-end="5806">Es ist achtzehn Uhr fünfundvierzig.</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="5810" data-end="6101">To practice telling time in A1 level German, you can use a clock app, listen to German radio stations that announce the time, or ask a German-speaking friend to quiz you. Learning this skill will make daily life in Germany, such as catching a train or making appointments, much easier.
