Looking for Insights on Family Dynamics in Addiction (441 views)

Im curious if anyone here has studied how families operate when someone is dealing with addiction. My father is in recovery, and the whole family dynamic shifted so much during his active addiction and now, too. Id like to understand what kinds of roles family members might adopt and why.

I get where youre coming from. Addiction often brings out roles we dont expect—like caretakers, scapegoats, or peacemakers. Each person reacts in their own way to handle the stress and instability. These roles can bring a kind of balance to the family, but they can also prevent real change if they arent recognized and worked through.

It’s insightful to want to look at these roles closely. Recognizing them can sometimes be the first step in breaking unhealthy cycles and building new ways to relate and support each other. You might find this article helpful https://unitedrecoveryproject.com/rehab-blog/family-roles-in-addiction/ It does a***d job explaining common family roles in addiction and how they can either support or complicate recovery. Learning about these could make a difference for your family as you adjust to the changes.
